The Art of Coffee in Palermo: Maestro D’Angelo’s Wooden Sculptures

The Art of Coffee Carved in Wood: The Masterpieces of Maestro D’Angelo

Our historic shop, located in Discesa dei Giudici in Palermo, has remained unchanged since the 1950s. Besides being included by the Financial Times in the list of the 30 best independent coffee shops in the world, the venue houses a true piece of the city’s artistic heritage. On the side walls, framing the atmosphere of yesteryear, stand out two monumental wooden high reliefs that tell the story and the supply chain of coffee, from cultivation to the cup.

The 1951 Sculptures: A Journey from the Plantation to the Cup

These precious works were carved in 1951 by the master cabinetmaker from Palermo, D’Angelo. The two large panels represent an extraordinary visual journey celebrating our daily work:

  • The first panel celebrates the land and the hard agricultural work. Human figures with classical features are portrayed during the meticulous hand-picking of coffee cherries, followed by loading them onto pack animals and transporting them to the boats ready to sail the oceans.

  • The second panel illustrates the crucial final stages of the supply chain. With a plastic and sculptural dynamism typical of post-WWII art, it depicts the fascinating operations of processing the beans and preparing the beverage. The work culminates in the sacred moment of offering a tasting, where coffee transforms into pure sensory pleasure and a moment of sharing.

The Connection with Palermo’s “Drawing Room”: The Galleria delle Rose

The value of these works does not stop at the walls of our roastery, but is inextricably intertwined with the urban and architectural history of the city. Maestro D’Angelo is, in fact, the same celebrated author of the large wooden “lunettes” placed at the entrances of the Galleria delle Rose.

As reported in an in-depth historical article on the Balarm portal dedicated to this place, the Galleria delle Rose is an enchanting corner nestled between Piazzale Ungheria and Via Generale Magliocco, considered in all respects the true “drawing room” of Palermo during the years of rebirth. The name of the gallery is still proudly displayed today on a half-moon shaped sign installed at the top of its opening on the Piazzale Ungheria side, adorned with a delicate branch of red roses.

Knowing that the skilled hand that shaped our panels is the same one that decorated the entrances of one of the symbolic places of post-war Palermitan elegance fills us with pride. Stepping into our shop is like taking a step back in time. We invite you to visit us not only to let yourself be enveloped by the unmistakable aroma of freshly roasted coffee, but also to admire these timeless masterpieces up close, witnesses of an era when art, craftsmanship, and commerce merged into a single, magnificent expression.
